Thursday May 31 sudoku lies (change your mind)

MEtRoday: Wednesday 3185, 3028, 3058, 5042; Thursday 3201, 3275, 3073, 5006

I've just beaten the Sudoku puzzle. And by beaten I don't mean completing. That's easy enough (usually, with enough time of course). I mean I've discovered that in today's Express puzzle, it's not playing by its own rules. Those rules are: Fill in the boxes so each row, column and 3-by-3 square includes the digits 1 through 9. Starter numbers are given, and missing numbers are filled in by a process of elimination using logic to narrow down exactly which number will fit in each box, because Sudoku states there is only one solution. You discover one number, fill it in, it gives you a clue to another, and so on until the entire grid is filled.

Figure A: This is how the puzzle appears upon starting, minus the red illustration lines, which are explained here as a good first move: in the upper right hand 3-by-3 grid, you can tell the number "3" cannot be placed in the top row, for there is already a "3" in that row, in top middle 3-by-3. It also can't lower in the lower row because there is already a "3" in that row, in the top left 3-by-3. Therefore, it has must be place in one of the open spaces in the middle row. If you switch vertically, and we're still concentrating on the upper right 3-by-3, it cannot be placed in the left column because there is already a "3" in that column, and it can't be placed in the right column, because there is already a "3" in that column. Therefore it must be placed in the center row, center column of the 3-by-3 grid, just above the "7". Make sense?

Figure B: This with the remainder of the missing numbers filled in, the point I got to just as I was pulling into BradRo this morning. The missing numbers in the 2nd row (and middle top 3-by-3) are "2" and "7". The missing numbers in the 7th row (and middle bottom 3-by-3) are also "2" and "7". Both these would naturally complete the 4th and 6th vertical columns.

But here's the thing: if you put the numbers in the order 2, 7 on top and 7, 2 on bottom (Figure C), the puzzle also solved by transposing both sets of these numbers, therefore putting in 7, 2 on top and 2, 7 on bottom (Figure D). Isn't there only supposed to be ONE solution and I wonder which one Express will publish?

Monday May 28 bringing wholahay back

MEtRoday: none

In a late-night celebri-spiraling fit, I stumbled upon Wholahay's first album, Wholahits, which is sure to be an instant sensation. Of course y'all remember Wholahay Brown from ANTM. Her 2007 retrospective collection includes such hits as "What the hell!", "You are lying!", "A t-shirt? A t-shirt? What 'cho gonna do with a t-shirt?" and my personal fave "Hold up. I'm not no freakin' lesbo." Sample and download all of the fun tracks, throw them into your iTunes and just wait for them to come up in a shuffle. The clips are at the bottom of the article, but fourfour also gives such a great rundown of each episode that I may have to include his recaps in addition to Television Without Pity's observations (which has a great wrap-up of the final ep) during next cycle's postings.

Sunday May 27 outside

MEtRoday: Friday: none; Saturday: none; Sunday: none

After two days spent in bed fighting sickness, and three days of not leaving the apartment, today I bravely decide to break free from the blissfully-quiet-for-the-long-weekend District's Loudest Apartment Building and venture outside. I grab my camera and sunglasses and hop on the bike, iPod cranking away. I know it's dangerous but it's not really turned up that loud. I think I'll head to the new baseball stadium construction lot and check out the progress. And check out the waterfront scene there. They're supposed to be cleaning it up and making it all nice for turriss 'n' folk.

///

Post-ride update: Nightclubs like Nation and L&F are either in the process of being leveled or are already a gravel lot ready for the Pizzeria Uno and Champs bar or whatever they're going to put down there to attract people to go and spend a day at the ballpark. And they better put something amazing because right now it's still Metro bus service garages, power and water treatment plants, unlabeled government buildings and rock quarry distribution centers and not a sidewalk in sight. Dropping in a huge (and by the look of its cladding, ugly) concrete ballpark into this macadam isn't going to make nightlife magically appear. And the riverwalk? Yeah, "paved footpaths and asphalt biking trails" is really what one wants to have underneath their feet while strolling by a muggy river in August humidity.

And the name of this part of DC near the Anacostia River? Buzzard Point. Now if the Nats would change their name to the DC Buzzards, that would be quite interesting—wait a minute! Isn't their mascot some sort of bird? Maybe it is a buzzard. It's all coming together now.

These graphs are generated from information already available on this site that relate to my 20 dates with Todges.

Figure A illustrates how many days had passed since our previous date. For example, if three days had passed between D5 and D6, then D6's bar would be three. D1 has a bar of four, because our first date was four days after meeting each other.

Figure B illustrates where our dates took place on a DC quadrant map. For those who don't know, The Capitol is in the origin where the quadrant lines shoot out north, east, south and west. If we were at several places during the evening, I chose the spot where the activity was most significant, usually dinner.

The HELVETICA documentary tour has announced its Chicago and DC-area premieres:

CHICAGO, WASHINGTON DC SUBURBAN MARYLAND, PREMIERE TIX ON SALE
Tickets for the June 15th Chicago Premiere at the Gene Siskel Film Center are on sale now. Director Gary Hustwit will be in attendance at both the 6pm and 8:30pm screenings. Tickets will also go on sale this week for the DC Maryland premiere, at the AFI Silverdocs Festival June 16th at 9pm. Gary Hustwit will introduce the screening and answer questions afterwards.

You can buy tickets for DC's Maryland's premiere here. $8 for AFI members, $10 general public. To guarantee admittance, you must be SEATED in the theater 15 minutes prior to the screening's scheduled start time. No exceptions. They're picky up there in Silver Spring.

Unfortunately, June 16 is the same night as Tamera's party for Kristin. Her invite says from 4–8 on the roof terrace and I'm wondering how strict Tam is gonna be about that 8:00 end time. Metro informs me that I can catch the 8:01 S2 (arrival: 8:29) or the 7:46 S4 (arrival 8:12), both of which travel all the way up 16th St to the Silver Spring Metro, which is two blocks away from the AFI Theater. I wonder how ontime these buses are going to be, because I'd really like to go see this movie at its premiere, as opposed to waiting for wider release.

I went by the vet today to pick up the Twin's formal diagnosis and what her recommended meds would be. Currently she is taking 0.75 mls by mouth every 12 hours of liquid Clavamox (amoxicillin trihydrate/clavulanate potassium) to fight the infection on her front right paw. The results from her blood work:

Hyperthryroidism Therapy Recommendations: Your pet has been diagnosed with Hyperthyroidism, an overactive thyroid gland. Clinical signs may include GI issues (vomiting &/or diarrhea), increased appetite, weight loss, hyperactivity &/or other behavioral issues. The recommended therapy for this disease is either:

1) Medical management with medication given for the rest of your pet's life and routine monitoring of the effect of this medication. There can be side effects from the medication.

OR

2) I-131 Isotope Therapy done at speciaity clinics in the area... Your pet would be hospitalized in a specialty ward... for 3–7 days...

NO. This is not an option; I don't think the Twin, at her age, is up for this or any kind of surgery. The report continues:

Sunday May 20 warm weekend

MEtRoday: Friday 1001, 4014, 3069, 1137; Saturday 5147, 5158, 1019; Sunday: none

BBQ1: Actually, let me backup.

Pre-BBQ1: Saturday: Katie & Will just adopted a rescue greyhound named Macy, so we went down to Tunni's to sit outside, enjoy the weather and let the dog be one of those dogs you see sitting outside at patios while the owners have a bite to eat and a beer or two. Then we went back to Katie's to let Macy chill a little bit, I think she was a little excited. Ok, on with the story.

BBQ1: This was for my friend Scott who is moving to L.A. Since Will is sub-letting Scott's SW apartment while he's gone, I invited them to come along. With it being on Kentucky Ave, the three of us just walked over there, which was really nice to be going to a bbq in the hood. Several hours later (and way behind schedule):

BBQ2: This was for my friend Kristin who is moving to L.A. I'm getting to her house around 10, thinking and hoping the evening would still be going, but no, everyone had already left, and so me and Kristin & Glenn just chilled in her background, strummed a guitar, had some (more) beers and chilled.

BBQ3: Sunday: There's absolutely no way I can wake up and hear an alarm for Eddy's graduation ceremony, but I do attend the bbq later that day at the pHierce school. Then we run over to Goldy's for The Simpson's 400th episode, chinese food is getting ordered supplied with more beers. Oy.

Friday May 18 meds

MEtRoday: 1001, 4014, 3069, 1137

Yesterday I had to forgo two planned activites: drinks with Mr Scott & the Juhl-Telligman's, and the Ladytron DJ set at Rock & Roll Hotel. The reason: the Twin had a vet visit to remove her ingrown toenails, and since she started meds to fight off infection (not to mention a traumatic vet-visit day) I thought it best to come home and see how she's doing. And she seems to be fine.

Amazingly, she had three nails on her front paws that had grown so long they were curling into the pads of her feet, and I know from experience it's better to take care of this sooner than later. Oddly, she's never needed to have her nails clipped in her life, the usual shedding/trimming was taken care of by nature. Hum always trimmed her own nails, and Rattle did too, but maybe she's getting lazy in her old age.

So I zipped a car and took her in. I was somewhat nervous with how she was going to react to having her nails clipped and all, but she did so remarkably well. No hissing, no clawing, no biting, just very submissive yet very observant of all that happened around her. She was very passive (and of course freaked out) but let the vet do whatever he needed to do. Being a 16-year-old cat Dr. Murphy was concerned about her weight and the condition of her coat. These are warning signs, he says. And then there were blood tests, and with me being on a budget for the DD show I asked for an estimate but bought the whole package anyway.

She has tested positive for hyper-thyroidism, which is not unusual in older cats. She is also anemic. So this means she will be on two-pills-a-day med regiment for the rest of her life. I haven't been back to the vet to pick up the whole scenario and info, but this is what was relayed on the phone. If you don't know, giving pills to a cat is no fun scenario. Right now she's on some liquid antibiotics for her paws and let me tell you, it ain't fun. Hopefully I'll be able to grind the pills up and mix with her food. And that's the latest update on the 16-year-old who is not getting a black Trans Am or a pink guy for her birthday.

Here is the final America's Next Top Model Placemat. I don't know if the rule revisions for the final episode are appropriate; it took six episodes to finalize the rules as they were. It was more of a learning and playing experience that took its own shape. It's been a wonderful 3-month journey! I hope those who played had a little bit of fun, because I know it's a silly game to a silly show. And maybe just once you had an opportunity to play the drinking version. So download your last Placemat of the Cycle, vote for your fave and enjoy. I sincerely thank you for playing.

America's Next Top Model airs Wednesday at 8E/7C on The CW. A recap of last week's episode can be found here, and all episodes can be downloaded from iTunes. Plus a shout to Sissyphus who discovered that episodes are also available for viewing on the CW website.

Monday May 14 nata! ney-ney! cha cha diva! (say it three times, fast)

MEtRoday: 1148, 1169, 1216, 4011, 5000

Today I realized that tomorrow's set of rules for playing the ANTM Placemat game aren't really going to be valid anymore, with just three contestants left. Plus, the format of the show will change, with two Panels, two eliminations and then the winner being announced with tears-for-everyone.

It might be a little fruitless to be filling in points for the three contestants, since I think you're going to have to choose who is eliminated after the Cover Girl commercial, and who is going to win the runway finale. Is there any point in rating them since it will be down to two halfway thru the show? I guess you could hedge your bets by throwing the assigned points to the opposite model that you've chosen to win, that way either outcome you're going to technically win, by choosing outright or by earning points. Maybe next cycle there would be a victory scale: if you win each week by choosing the girl eliminated, maybe you'd get three points. If the girl eliminated is the one with the most points on your sheet, maybe you get that number of points. And then I'll keep tally of everybody's points and post them? Wholahay knows. Maybe I'll have these rules worked out by the start of next Cycle.

I'll post the placemat tomorrow, but in the meantime check out this hilarious rundown of the episode from a couple of weeks ago, when Brit had her meltdown. It even has soundclips. And it's where I found this lovely booty tooch. It's not quite as mesmerizing as the Tyra Fierce Eyes with a Snap, but it should hold you off until Wednesday night.

Sunday May 13 mama used to say

MEtRoday: none

This weekend I went down to see my parents. Usually I go down for my monthly visit towards the end of the month, but with it being Mother's Day and all, I couldn't not go. This might be my Mom's last Mother's Day and I wanted to be there. Due to her ALS, she didn't have the energy to get out of bed so we all took turns going in and visiting her.

In addition to having my brothers and sister-in-law there with my niece and nephew, my Aunt Carol from Florida (who just moved up to Fredericksburg, about 40 mins away from my parents) and my grandparents that I hadn't seen in over a year were also there. I enjoyed spending time with them.

Tomorrow Dad will drive Mom to the ALS Center in Charlottesville, where she will have a urinary catheter put in. She already has a feeding tube, put in about a month ago, so it's tube-in, tube-out now. She can still take medications and liquids orally, although the left side of her mouth is failing. Her speech is soft and laborious so she doesn't speak much anymore. Tuesday she goes to get fitted for a headbrace that will laterally support her head, also keeping it up and her air passage open while sitting in her wheelchair. And since she was pretty much immobile today, I went out and took pictures of her irises so she could see them blooming.

Saturday May 12 painting in the streets

MEtRoday: none

I'm taking a later-than-usual train down to my parent's this weekend, so that I would have time today to check out the Gene Davis Street Painting, part of Colorfield.remix.

The 700 block of D St NW was being painted to resemble a huge Gene Davis painting. I wanted to volunteer and help paint, but I didn't want to press my time before my train. I'm not a good traveler when panicked for time.

So I went down to observe and take some pictures. It definitely was a gorgeous day for it. (There also was an Asian-American festival that happening on Penn Ave.) I talked to a volunteer coordinator and he said they we're using water-based latex paint which would last on the street surface for about three weeks, with typical road use and rain. After that, they would come back and powerwash any remaining paint.

The color scheme for the street painting was selected by Mokha Laget, a long-time studio assistant to Gene Davis. This project was originally put forth in 87, using a different color palette, also selected by Laget. To quote the press release, "She has created an alternative scheme much closer in color, rhythm, musicality and lyricism to Gene Davis' paintings." Brava!

(I wore my stripped shirt just for the occasion.)

Friday May 11 get smart, usa

MEtRoday: 1261, 5006

Today smart USA announced its "street smart" tour of America, promoting their 2008 fortwo. The tour starts in May 19 on the west coast, and blows through DC Aug 18–22.

You can see if the tour is coming to your city here. Most stops are approximately four days, so you really have no excuse not to check them out. The traveling show will consist of an exhibit trailer, complete with interactive displays and virtual demonstrations. Included will be a display of the fortwo's protective framework tridion cell, which is it's state-of-the-art shell casing to protect from accidents. I'm sure many American's are going to be afraid of this car because it resembles a little blip that will get crushed when hit by an Escalade, but the news is, the fortwo is just as safe as your Camry, sweetie. With just as many airbags, to boot.

The road show will provide four vehicles available for test drives (!) on a closed course or neighborhood streets, depending on the location. Of course a smart USA team member will accompany you to provide answers to your questions (and to make sure you don't steal the cute little bugger).

Thursday May 10 get out of town

MEtRoday: 1188, 3070, 1238, 2048, 2014, 5032 but the inside tag said 5191

Some 'mos have started a business venture to schlep us b-, c- and d-list crowd to Rehoboth and back this summer. (A-listers never take a bus, sweetie. Anywhere. Remember that.) It's cleverly called Rehobus. Sounds like 'Rehoboth', but with much more lisp.

Here's their plan: Pickup Stop A is, naturally, the Duplex Diner. The 55-capacity bus departs at 6:15 on Friday (starting May 25) and then goes to Pickup Stop B, which is, oddly, the newly-christened New York Avenue Metro stop. Huh? Whatev. It sounds good to me because it's closer and would be a lot easier for me to get to, and of course it's on the way out of town (New York Ave) and it's nice that they included it. Of course, all the toni seats would be taken already.

Arrival time in Rehoboth is approx 9:15, a conservative estimate in summer traffic. They'll drop you off at the Rehoboth Fire House and be sure to be back there Sunday at 5:30 or you're left behind.

The buses motorcoaches have "meticulously clean restrooms" on board. Yeah, I've heard that before. Each seat has its own headphone jack for XM Radio, CDs or the DVD video which will be shown. Six flat screen TVs will play popular movies and videos. So it's kinda like you're doing cardio except you're sitting down and most likely cocktailing. (Cocktails are not for sale but you are welcome to bring your own. Cups and ice will be provided and sodas are $2.) In a smart move, they are partnering with Duplex Diner and Lori's in Rehoboth for take-on meals: the Rehobustogo Menu. Wifi is also planned but not implemented yet.

Tickets purchased before May 30 are discounted: one-way tickets are$35, round-trip $65, book of ten $300. After that it's regular price: one-way $45, round-trip $78, book of ten $350.

Plus with advanced notice, they will transport your bike. Sweet.

The kick-off party on Friday, May 18 is at 18 & U Duplex Diner will feature drink specials, the "Rehobus Models" (good Lord) and discounted ticket sales. The Diner will also feature pre-boarding happy hours throughout the summer.

That's right, kids, only two more episodes left of America's Next Top Model. Phew! After tomorrow night we'll know who are, to quote Bre from Cycle 5, "the three baddest bitches in America." She was actually in London when she said it, but that's beside the point. So, after tomorrow night we'll know who are the three baddest bitches in America who are really in Sydney, Australia. Good enough for me.

So. WHO! Goes home? That's right, Wholahay's going home. At least that's my bet. Cha Cha Diva, Natasha from Rasha and The Bitch are just too strong. Next week should be a slugfest; I can't wait for that. I hope Jay takes them out into the bush for a harsh shoot(ing) with a family of Aborigines.

But that's next week. For now, download your placemat and have a fierce time.

Wired has given us a list of all those things New Yorkers and Washingtonians went out and wasted money on after 9/11. Remember that? Yeah. So now, after most of the scare hype has declined, they offer a starter kit for the apocalypse. What they fail to include is a gun, because when the dirty bomb or rapture happens that's what you're going to be in need of. Their "House Kit", for when you're lying around waiting for someone with a gun to barge in and steal your House Kit, includes:

First Aid: Those Band-Aids will really come in handy trying to patch that severed arm or femur poking out of your thigh.
Clothes: Because after the heat blast burns your clothes and melts your skin, you'll really want a kicky outfit.
Plastic sheeting: Because now, you really will be pissing yourself.
Zip ties: These will come in handy when those guntotters need to tie you up.
Water: Carrying around five gallons of water is a piece of cake!
Food: Nothing says I'm A Survivor like Trader Joe's Organic Peanut Butter Cookies.
Flashlight: So essential during Nuclear Winter.
Protective wear: You really needed this before that bomb exploded. But now that you survived you may as well put it on.
Tools: Now is a good time to install that CD changer in your Audi.
Matches: As if enough around you isn't already going to be set ablaze.

These they have listed to be placed in a "Go Pack", just in case someone with a gun is chasing after you:

Radio: To hear that never-ending signal test of the Emergency Broadcast System. Instructions will never come.
Cash: As if greenbacks are to be of any value anymore.
Documents: Yes, I actually own that space of air up there that is now a leveled building.
Mylar space blanket: Hip. Trendy. Apocalyptic cool.
Clothes: Make sure you pack some Dockers, because after the bomb drops, formality is a forgotten concept.
Food: People seeing you eat will get you killed faster than anything.
Essential medicines: Better bring your Prozac so you won't be stressed while everything around you burns.
Duct tape: So you won't scream.
Signal devices: Because once you've found refuge, nothing brings the vigilantes around like a flare signal.
Multitool: Just in case you need to pick your teeth with that little toothpick that comes with it.

And there you go. Twenty little items and life's a breeze in your hometown. After about 50,000 years, of course.

Duran Duran have announced they will perform a private, one-off NYC show at the Hammerstein Ballroom on June 17. Tickets are only available to Fan Club Members, which of course I am one.

From the press release:

Speaking from the studio in London, where they are currently mixing their upcoming album (Epic Records), Duran Duran today announced a special 'one night only' New York City performance for members of their official fan community. Open exclusively to members of DuranDuranMusic.com, the band will perform at the Hammerstein Ballroom, in Manhattan, on June 17th. Tickets will go on sale via a Reservation Request System at www.DuranDuranMusic.com.

In what is guaranteed to be a memorable evening, the four band members are excited to do a concert just for community members. "We're all very excited to get back to the stage after being in the studio for so long! I can't think of a better place to come back to than New York City and a fan community only show. Get ready for a great night, it's gonna be a party!" said John Taylor.

I've tallied up the cost for making this one-day overnight trip, and these are the minimal financial obligations:

Concert ticket: $98.50
'Convenience' Fee: $12.95
Hotel room: $101.58
Round-trip Bus fare: $40

Total: $253.03

Wow, that's a lotta coin for a 24-hour trip, and that's going on the cheap. So I am throwing my dignity in the gutter and opening this trip up for donations. Your generous donation of $20, $35 or more will facilitate my seeing this exclusive show.

All donations, no matter how large or how small, are welcomed and appreciated. Donations are not tax-deductible. All Donators will receive a special shout-out on futurejunkie.com (this alone is worth making a Donation, fer shurr).

DD is also asking Members to pick one out of a list of 13 obscure or rarely-played-songs to play live during this full-set concert. An informal poll of those tracks is here, so let's see which song the fuju reading audience would like to hear. But first some brief info on each song:

All She Wants Is: 2nd single from Big Thing, 1988.

Land: Album track from Big Thing, 1988.

Liberty: Album track from Liberty, 1990.

Lonely In Your Nightmare: Album track from Rio, 1982.

Meet El Presidente: 3rd single from Notorious, 1986.

Midnight Sun: Album track from Medazzaland, 1997.

My Own Way: Gateway early-release single from Rio, 1982.

To The Shore: Album track from Duran Duran. This track was dropped from the US re-issue of their first album, being replaced with Is There Something I Should Know?

Secret Oktober: B-side to Union of the Snake, 1983.

The Seventh Stranger: Album track from Seven and the Ragged Tiger, 1983. Also included on Arena, 1984.

Thank You: Album track from Thank You, 1995. This track, with an alternate mix, was also included on the soundtrack to the movie "Threesome" months before the Thank You album released.

The Violence of Summer: 1st single from Liberty, 1990.

Wednesday May 02 1/5

The days creep up on me now.

It's a Wednesday In May. That means it's the Twins™ birthday. But now, for the first time ever, it's just the Twin's birthday. Just Rattle, alone. I'm to the point of dealing with Hum's passing where I'm not a blubbering idiot but I still feel her loss. Now I've got Rattle here, going down the same elderly weight-loss road that Hum did, celebrating her first birthday alone. Of course she doesn't know what day today is, she just knows she's getting a treat for dinner, but I know. I'll always know.

This year's Cinco de Mayo is the exact six-month aniversary date of Hum's passing, but I won't write about it on that date, I'll go ahead and do it here on their birthday: Rest in peace, little girl, I think about you every single day. I miss your meow, I miss how you loved your back being scratched, I miss how you woke me every morning, I miss how you immediately adapted to me scratching your tummy, I miss the dent in your tail from your cancer surgery in 2001, I miss how you never fought with Sissy about food, I miss how you would start grooming Sissy knowing it would always end in a wrestling match. The interaction between the two of you is what I really, really miss the most. I'll tip one out for you come Saturday.

And now a very Happy Birthday to Miss Rattle, who turns 16 every Wednesday this May. I love you too, little girl. I think about you every single day. You are the one that always followed the bouncing laser pointer, that stayed in the background to give Sissy her voice, the one I lost twice but always waited patiently for me to find you, who now wakes me up every morning, and like Sissy also loves having her tummy scratched, never fought with her sister about food, and started grooming with Sissy knowing it would always end up in a wrestling match. The interaction between the two of you is what I really, really miss the most, but I'm so happy that you are still with me.

Wednesday May 02 the girl who blames the taxi driver

After last week's how-did-they-get-here ep, you have no excuse not to be caught up and play a kick-ass ANTM Placemat Game. Preview for tonight: "The five remaining models are sent on "go sees" to top Australian designers and must use their personality, portfolio and runway walk to impress them. One model surprises the designers by asking to keep the clothes, while another doesn't make it back in time and explodes into a fit of rage. At the photo shoot, the girls must work a swimsuit in two ways. Tyra shoots them in sensual poses for a women's magazine, however, they must also strike sexy poses for a men's magazine. One model impresses Tyra while another falls flat. The judges send home one model." Duh.

Fit of rage? Who could that be? I could definitely see Renee going there, even without a time limit. She's probably going into one right now as you're reading this. Jaslene? Maybe a fit of rage, but only against herself for doing as well as she did six weeks ago. Natasha? Does she even know how to rage in English? Or for that matter, in Australian? Dionne? There's no rage there. Maybe a "Hay-el no that taxi driver took his fuckin time", but no rage. Brittany? Who? No, really. Who?

America's Next Top Model airs Wednesday at 8E/7C on The CW. A recap of last week's episode can be found here, and all episodes can be downloaded from iTunes.

Tuesday May 01 unique sausages

While biking down 7th St on my way to work yesterday morning, I noticed up ahead past Independence Ave that there was yellow crime scene tape blocking my way past North Carolina Ave. Upon getting closer, I noticed that the entire block was cordoned off on 7th St, around Eastern Market and fire trucks were everywhere. I didn't see a fire or anything that resembled a mass crime scene that would warrant taping off an entire city block. Being detoured, I traveled down N' C' lina to Pennsylvania Ave, and that is where I saw the damage.

Eastern Market had burned. Massively. The roof was partially gone and sagging. Not wanting to be late for work, I hurried to the Metro and immediately got online after my morning meeting. It was there that I learned from Drudge Report that the Market fire had started in one of the garbage bins in the back and spread to the entire building. The Post didn't even carry the story until mid-morning—typical. They had more important things to bring to the public, like some Senator getting a $200 car wash, or someone getting robbed 50 miles away in a "suburb".

Coming home from work I surveyed the damage (7th St, C St, North Carolina and Pennsylvania Aves still blocked) and went home to get my camera. Lots of people were doing the same; the local news crews were there too. I could still smell the smoke.

For those unfamiliar with Eastern Market, it is a 6-day farmer's market (ironically, closed Mondaysor is that an arson clue?) with flea market and specialty vendors setting up tables on the weekend. It's a fun thing to do, go down and get fresh produce, seafood, visit the butcher for meats and unique sausages, or the baker for varieties of fresh breads (sliced or unsliced). And don't forget the Cheese Man, who offers floating mozzarella and any kind of hard cheese you'd ever want.

This is going to be a huge economic blow to the Mom & Pop vendors who have done business here for many, many years. And with summertime coming up which is their busiest season it will be especially difficult. I hope there is some consideration to give the vendors that were normally in the South Hall special concession over the outside weekend vendors, assuming there will be any kind of vendors on the weekends now.

Mayor Fenty has, of course, promised to rebuild but, yeah, like he'll have any say in the matter. Knowing the way DC operates, Eastern Market will end up resembling this: they'll gut the frame and rebuild the expansive interior South Hall, no doubt. But under it will be three levels of pass-key parking and on top they'll also tack on an additional six stories of luxury condos, calling it Eastern Market Place or The Condos at Eastern Market or some such nonsense, "with expansive views of Capitol Hill", starting from the low $800s.

---

Eastern Market was built in 1873 and designed by architect Adolph Cluss. Designated as a National Historic Landmark, it had been in continuous operation since its opening day 134 years ago.

UPDATE: A photo from today's Express (below). This is the scorched interior, looking south towards Pennsylvania Avenue way; the fishmongers are behind the camera. The glass cases at the rear of the photo is where the baker was, and the glass clases to the right is where Canales Quality Meats was, where I would get "Carolina Hot" ground sausage to make sauce for pasta, or their yummy seasoned sausages and sliced meats for weekday sandwiches.

Remembrances from the Post (they've latched onto the story now) can be found in the following articles:

Eastern Market, Corner Store And Cornerstone

For Its Neighbors, A Stock of Wares That Money Can't Buy

Also, timetables coming out now are say it's going to be TWO YEARS to rebuild. Two years? Aren't they building a 41,000 seat baseball stadium in less time than that? Again, horrors of polished marble floors, a Crate and Barrel outlet store, escalators and maybe an H&M are swirling in my head. Even an Apple Store would revolt me, and that's saying a lot.

My temporary solution: close off 7th St to vehicular traffic (we love closing streets in DC), set up some canopies to shade the summer sun, and let the vendors set up all the way from North Carolina [Avenue] to Pennsylvania [Avenue].
